5 Steps Toward Finding Fulfillment at Work
Work is inevitable. It is something that we must do in order to provide for ourselves and often our families. It can be challenging, tiresome, and sometimes overwhelming. But there is an inherent beauty and a deep purpose to work.
One of the most profound things about being an attorney is that you’re helping people work through big decisions that often impact them or other people in a direct way.
Perhaps you’ve been helping a founder sell a business he has been building for years so he can exit and retire or reinvest and begin building something new. Or maybe you’re focused on the litigation side, where the case has a lasting impact on the lives of many. No matter what area of law you practice, the job is one that requires a high caliber of determination and commitment.
The work we do as lawyers makes a significant difference in the lives of those we work with, and my goal as a legal recruiter is to ensure that you are in a role that best aligns with your personal mission and desire to grow and serve.
While the days may be long, the weeks and months go fast. Years go by in the blink of an eye, and it’s easy to lose sight of the impact we’ve made. The closer you are to your “why,” your personal mission and reason you do what you do, the closer you are to finding fulfillment in your work.
If you’re desiring more fulfillment in your work but don’t know how to get there, start by taking these 5 steps.
Define your “why.”
This is something I always begin with because it sets the foundation for everything you do. When we work together, we will assess both your personal and professional goals to piece together your “why” and find opportunities that align with both your short- and long-term goals.
Continuously re-evaluate your goals.
While you’re working toward a goal and beginning to lose steam, ask yourself, “Is this serving me?” There will be times when your priorities have shifted and your goals reflect that. When you’re setting your goals, base them off your “why.” That way, when you achieve one, you will feel both accomplished and fulfilled.
Keep learning.
Never be afraid of not being the smartest person in the room. Learning is something that we should always be striving for, whether through reading, working with a mentor, or continuing formal education. Education builds confidence and keeps your mind fresh and working hard.
Build connections and meaningful relationships.
When you’re spending almost 80 hours a week at work, invest in getting to know the people who are working alongside you and whom you interact with on a regular basis. While professionalism is important, taking an interest in those you work with allows for more collaboration and a positive atmosphere.
Adopt a gratitude mindset.
Gratitude is at the root of all fulfillment. There will always be more that we want, and it’s easy to believe we need a better title, salary, car, etc. But when we focus on gratitude for where we are now, fulfillment will follow. Challenge yourself to focus on the positive, and shift your mindset from one of scarcity to one of abundance.
Understanding the importance of work and the role it plays in our lives is key to finding fulfillment in it. If you’re ready to consider a new path toward success and fulfillment, I encourage you to consider how GGPAAS Recruiting can help you enjoy the work that you do.
