For those of you who are within your first few months at a new firm, keep these 5 things in mind as you familiarize yourself with your new role.
Add value each and every day.
You were chosen for this new role because the firm saw something in you that they knew they needed. Maintain the same level of confidence you had while going through the interview process, and be mindful of how you are contributing to the team as a whole.
2. Get to know the people around you.
Whether you’re on a team or a partner at a firm, knowing your colleagues’ strengths and weaknesses is just as important as knowing your own. Take time to get to know the people you’re working alongside, and lean on them for support. Encourage them in their work and create an environment where everyone succeeds instead of competes.
3. Ask for feedback and implement it.
When starting a new role, there will often be things you don’t know or aren’t doing exactly right. Ask your manager or colleague for feedback and take what they say to heart. Approach change with a positive attitude and continually seek ways to improve.
4. Earn your place.
While it may be tempting to step into a new role and want to share everything you see wrong immediately, challenge yourself to hold your tongue for the first few months. Take time to observe, learn the culture, and establish credibility. Be present and make note of suggestions or critiques you can voice further down the line.
5. Breathe.
The first few months in a new role can be stressful. Remember to be grateful for where you are and see the challenges as opportunities to grow. Balance is so important during this time, so give yourself permission to pause, rest, and take everything in. Approaching your new position with a sense of purpose and gratitude will help you succeed in the long run.
