How to get what you want: Tips for effective negotiation.

Congratulations! You have put in the hard work and have received an offer. Maybe you’re feeling a little bummed by the salary you were offered, or you’re hoping to sweeten the deal with a few work-from-home days or added vacation days.

Whatever it is that you want, now is the time to ask for it! By definition, negotiation is a discussion aimed at reaching an agreement. Both you and your employer should be satisfied at the end of the day, and negotiation is the vehicle to get you there.

GGPAAS Recruiting strives to match candidates with firms that align with their lifestyle, values, and aspirations. In order to achieve this, negotiation is a must.

Below I have provided you with the three most important things to consider when approaching a negotiation. Follow these and you’ll set yourself up for success! (Or work with us, and we’ll help you through it!)

  1. Do your homework and come prepared

Before you’re able to negotiate, you must know what you want and what you’re willing to settle on. Consider different scenarios and how you would respond to each. Research competitors and build your case as to why your counter offer is better than their original. Come prepared with questions, talking points, and lots of confidence.

2. Articulate what you want and why you deserve it

This leads us to point number two. You are your biggest advocate. Now is not the time to shy away from telling everyone how great you are. Rely on your preparation and articulate what you want and why you deserve it. A good negotiator is able to make their position seem like a win/win for both parties. Don’t be afraid to share what you bring to the table and how valuable you are to the team.

3. Listen and be willing to be flexible

The key to successful negotiation is not always what you say, but how well you understand the other party’s wants, needs, and motivations. This can only be done by listening and pulling information from what they tell you. The more you listen and retain, the better you will be at offering a counter that meets both your needs.

While you may be taking notes for a new job or promotion, the truth is that negotiation is a fundamental part of life and business. Remembering these tips and practicing them when you can will help you be a better negotiator in all areas of life, whether it be at the upcoming holiday table or while negotiating your salary.
