Knowing when and when NOT to negotiate.

Everyone has the ability to learn the skills of an effective negotiator. If you need a refresher on what it takes to get what you want, you can check out last week’s article, but today we’re focusing on the harder side of negotiating—knowing when and when not to say something.

It’s sometimes difficult to know when to push for what you want and when to accept what has been given to you. People have long been saying “don’t start a fight you can’t win,” and while negotiating may not always be that intense, it is an important sentiment to return to.

However, one of the most important things when it comes to finding the right fit is knowing what is and is not negotiable for you. Knowing this about yourself and your desired placement will make the process easier and more enjoyable.

GGPAAS recruiting takes a holistic approach to finding you the best placement. With career consultation, resume guidance, and interview preparation, candidates are ready for their next opportunity and can count on our team to see them through the finish line, including negotiations.

If you’re caught in between knowing whether or not to negotiate, consider these questions and weigh your options.

  1. Is your offer in writing?

Don’t get yourself worked up about something that isn’t final yet. When you receive your offer, review it carefully and compare it to your goals, and then consider if you need something else to seal the deal.

2. Do you know your value and can you articulate it?

When it comes to negotiating, it is important to stand your ground and communicate why you deserve whatever it is you’re asking for.

3. Are you willing to lose more than you gain?

Always consider what is on the table before negotiating. If you are satisfied with the offer and have already given the impression that you’ll take it, it may be difficult to negotiate.

4. Where are you willing to compromise?

It’s important to acknowledge that you may have to meet in the middle. Determine what is and is not negotiable for you.

Asking yourself these questions should bring clarity to your decision and build the framework of your negotiation strategy if you decide to move forward with one.
