How to know when it’s time to consider something new. Allowing your “why” to drive your success.
Last month I asked you to consider your “why.”
The purpose behind your work. The reason you get up every morning and pursue a career in law. Your “why” is what motivated you to stay up late studying for the bar, what keeps you at the office when you have a big matter, and what brings you joy when you feel stressed and overwhelmed.
Now, if you’ve found yourself overthinking, trying to morph and configure a “why” that conforms to your current course, take a step back. Let your “why” guide you, not the other way around. Your “why” is your northern star. Its light reveals a clear purpose for why you’re doing what you’re doing, and once you see that, you’re able to build your life around that vision and be more successful and more fulfilled. Aligning your goals with your “why” will help you push forward and achieve more.
If you feel like something has gotten off track or is taking you away from your goals, it’s important to pause and reflect on how you can realign. Remembering your “why” allows you to notice when something isn’t working and allows you to quickly realign your focus instead of wasting time and energy going in the opposite direction of your goals.
If you’ve identified your “why” but aren’t sure whether you should consider other opportunities, begin here. Reflect on the questions below, and if you can answer yes to any or all of these questions, it may be time to reconsider what other opportunities are out there.
Do you lack passion for your work?
Are you feeling burnt out and overwhelmed by every new task/project?
Do you feel complacent in your work and unmotivated to learn and grow?
Are you making time for your family and friends?
Do you feel disconnected from the mission that once excited you?
